Does your child love to sing? 2008-2009 Chorister Program at Ascension Church Designed for students in the after-school program at Ascension School, children belonging to Ascension Church, and others in the community Ascension Church has begun a Chorister program this fall. The choirmaster is Mr. Preston Smith, Director of Music at Ascension. The goal is for the choristers, ages 3rd grade through high school, to begin singing serious liturgical music along with the Ascension Choir of Adults for 11 a.m. Sunday (English) masses. Weekday rehearsals will be held in the church on Tuesday afternoons, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Ability to read music is preferred, but all children will be considered. To schedule an interview and hearing for your child (a time of assessing maturity, rhythmic recall, and pitch-matching), please contact Mr. Smith by e-mailing at MusicAtAscension@aol.com, by writing to him at the church address (Music Office, 221 West 107th Street, NYC 10025), or by calling the parish receptionist and leaving a message (212-222-0666). PIANO NEEDED The 11 o'clock Ascension Choir is in immediate need of a more adequate rehearsal piano to be used and kept in the Parish Center. (It would be locked, kept in tune, and used exclusively by Mr. Smith and other approved persons for the activities of the Ascension music program.) Do you have an instrument which you would consider donating? Do you happen to know of someone else? Would you be interested in giving one? A high-quality electronic keyboard would even be considered (for example, a Yamaha clavinova on legs and with weighted keys; not a tabletop model). Mr. Smith would need to examine the instrument and evaluate its quality before it was moved. The church cannot receive equipment which is beyond repair. Concerts and Recitals
Because of its very fine three-manual, historic pipe organ, recently-rebuilt Steinway grand piano, fantastic acoustics of city-wide renown, and its proximity to Columbia University, Ascension Church is often a venue for some of New York's best keyboard and choral music performances.
